Windows 7 64-bit and Skype issue: “Skype.exe is not a valid win32 application”. suggestions?
my sys is : HP Pav dv6t – windows 7, 64 bit.

I have downloaded skype a number of times – v3.6 and v4.2. Download succeeds but when i try to install it says “Skype.exe is not a valid win32 application”.and installation halts.

I googled a lot (for days) and gave up. I noticed many users can successfully install and run skype with the same OS. Dont know what’s wrong with my set up.. !

Has anyone else faced and fixed tjis issue?

all help and suggestions appreciated.
Thank you.

PS:This error occurs for me for some other applciations too, which claim to be Windows7 compatible.
Thank you, Zerin.
Skype website does not mention anything about 32/64 bit versions. Or, perhaps I missed it. Could you please share in case you know what needs to be done to ensure 64bit compatible download.

Thanks again.
Thank you all. Trying out all suggestions.
Will update the question.

Thanks.

ah ,yes, by compatibility i meant W7+64b compatibilty.

Make sure the Skype you download is 64bit compatible. It may be win 7 compatible but perhaps not 64bit. download it again to be sure.

go to control panel>internet options, and delete cookies and temp files.
download the Skype software again, but save it in a different folder.
    Try running it again.

There is no 64 bit version of Skype, yet. Only the 32 bit version.

So, only Windows 7 Professional x64, and Ultimate x64, can even run in “XP compatibility mode”, and then, only if the PC’s CPU supports Virtualization. But, W7 32-bit versions can run Skype with ease. That’s probably what you’ve seen before.

So, wait for Skype 64, it will likely be out soon.

TIP: Other apps “which claim to be Windows 7 compatible.” True, but only W7 x 32. You DO have to read the fine print, each app must specifically state it’s compatible with W7 x 64.

    Hi There,

Why not try Yahoo Voicet. It works just as well as Skype for about the same cost. Yahoo Messenger also supports video, chat, file transfer besides the call out feature that lets you call land lines or cell phones.

I have tried Skype and Yahoo Voice and prefer Yahoo Voice.

There is information below for Yahoo Voice.
    Hope this helps,
    Al

Try downloading it on another computer and putting it on a flash drive to install it on this computer. (It sounds as if your Windows installation is a little hosed – you might want to try a Windows repair – http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html )
